Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – December 2021

 

HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: During November, the entire Maldives received above-normal rainfall. Over the last 365 days, rainfall exceeded climatology by 20% in the Northern islands; by 7% in the Central islands, and was in deficit by 19% in the Central islands.

Predictions: In the months ahead, a weak La Nia trend is expected. Seasonal climate prediction for wetter tendency in the islands other than in the Southern-most island for January to March.

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – November 2021

 

HIGHLIGHTS


Monitored: 
During November, the entire Maldives received above-normal rainfall. Over the last 365 days, rainfall exceeded climatology by 18% in the Northern islands; and was in deficit by 26% in the Central islands.

Predictions: La Niña tendency is predicted in the months ahead, and this results in a dry tendency in the entire Maldives for December to February 2022.

During October, the Northern received above-normal rainfall while the Central and Southern islands received less. Over the last 365 days, rainfall exceeded climatology by 21% in the Northern islands; 5% in the Southern islands and was in deficit by 22% in the Central islands.

Predictions: La Niña tendency is predicted in months ahead and this results in the dry tendency in the Central and Southern Islands for November to January 2021.

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – May 2021

 

HIGHLIGHTS


Monitored:During April, the southern islands received above normal rainfall while the central and northern islands received less. Tropical Cyclone ‘Tauktae’ originated near the northern Maldives on May 10 with wind speeds of up to 170km/h - 185km/h (according to IMD at its peak). It tracked along the Western coast of India until it made landfall in Gujarat on the 15th May. This led to extreme rainfall over northern and central parts of the Maldives from 10th to -15th of May due to the long-range.

Predictions:With Enso neutral conditions established; dry conditions are set to prevail across Maldives from June -August 2021. The seasonal temperature remains climatological.The Deep Depression over the East-central Bay of Bengal intensified into Cyclonic Storm ‘Yaas’ and heads towards the north Odisha-West Bengal coast at a speed of 155 km/h to 165 km/h, gusting to 185 km/h on May 26. There could be long range impacts on the Maldives.

Predictions: With weak La Nina conditions established; dry conditions are set to prevail across Maldives from April-June 2021. The seasonal temperature remains climatological – perhaps the La Nina influence is countervailed by the prevailing anomalously warm ocean surfaces by the Maldives.

Predictions: With weak La Nina conditions established; dry conditions are set to prevail across Maldives from April-June 2021. The seasonal temperature remains climatological – perhaps the La Nina influence is countervailed by the prevailing anomalously warm ocean surfaces by the Maldives.
