Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – December 2022

 

HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: During November, the central islands received up to 15 mm above average rainfall while remaining islands received less. The average rainfall exceeded climatology in the central and southern islands by 26%; and was normal in the northern islands.

Predictions: A transition from the level of a La Niña to ENSO-neutral state is expected in the months ahead. Seasonal climate predictions predict a climatological average from January to March 2023 for the Maldives.

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – November 2022

 


HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: During September, the central islands received up to 15 mm above average rainfall while remaining islands received less. The average rainfall exceeded climatology in the central and southern islands by 20%; and was in deficit by 6% in the northern islands.

Predictions: A La Niña is expected to continue in the months ahead. Seasonal climate predictions predict a climatological average from December to February 2023 for the Maldives.

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – April 2022

  

HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: 
During March, the central islands received up to 5mm of rainfall while the remaining islands received less.
The average rainfall exceeded climatology in the Northern islands by 10%; and was in deficit by 44% in the Central islands and by 19% in the southern islands.
A deficit was built up during March for the all the islands however, an above-average rainfall was experienced in the Northern and Central islands from April. 

Predictions: A La Niña is in place for April and shall continue in the months ahead. Seasonal climate predictions predict a drought tendency from May to July 2022 for the Maldives.

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – March 2022

 

HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: During February, the entire Maldives received less rainfall than 5mm.  Over the last 365 days, rainfall exceeded climatology by 6.9% in the Northern islands; and was in deficit by 34% in the Central islands.

Predictions: A La Niña is in place for March and shall expect to continue in the months ahead. Seasonal climate predictions predict for April to June 2022 a neutral condition in the northern and central islands and a drought tendency in the southern islands.

Monitored: During January, the central and southern islands received above normal rainfall while the northern islands received less. Over the last 365 days, rainfall exceeded climatology by 10% in the Northern islands; by 8% in the Southern islands and was in deficit by 28% in the Central islands.

Predictions: In the months ahead, a weak La Niña trend is expected. Seasonal climate predictions indicate a wetter tendency in the Northern and Central islands and a drought tendency in the Southern Islands for March to May.
