Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – June 2023

HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: In June, the majority of the northern islands and central islands received up to 10 mm of rainfall, while other islands received less. Westerly wind observed during the month. The southern islands had the lowest temperature, while the northern islands had the highest.

Predictions: Up to 40 mm of rainfall is predicted for the northern islands on July 6 and 7 this week. El Niño conditions are present and are expected to gradually strengthen into the Northern Hemisphere winter 2023-24. Seasonal climate predictions predict a wet tendency for the northern islands; and near-neutral to dry tendency for central and southern islands from July to September 2023 for the Maldives.

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – May 2023

HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: During April, the majority of the central islands and southern islands received up to 5 mm of rainfall, while other islands received less.

Predictions: A transition from ENSO-neutral is expected in the next couple of months, with a greater than 90% chance of El Niño persisting into the Northern Hemisphere winter. Seasonal climate predictions predict a dry and warmer tendency from June to August 2023 for the Maldives.

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – April 2023

HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: During March, the central islands received up to 10 mm of rainfall, while other islands received less

Predictions: ENSO-neutral conditions are expected to continue through the Northern Hemisphere spring, followed by a 62% chance of El Niño developing during May-July 2023. Seasonal climate predictions predict a dry and warmer tendency from May to July 2023 for the Maldives.

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – March 2023

HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: During February, the entire Maldives received less than 5 mm of rainfall. The average rainfall exceeded climatology in the central and southern islands by 29%; and was normal in the northern islands.

Predictions: La Niña has ended and ENSO-neutral conditions are expected to continue in the months ahead. Seasonal climate predictions predict a climatological average from April to June 2023 for the Maldives.

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – February 2023

HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: During January, the entire Maldives received up to 5 mm, while some islands received less. The average rainfall exceeded climatology in the central and southern islands by 27%; and was in deficit by 2% in the northern islands.

Predictions: A transition from the level of a La Niña to ENSO-neutral state is expected in the months ahead. Seasonal climate predictions predict a climatological average from March to May 2023 for the Maldives.
