Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – December 2024

  

HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: In November, the central islands received up to 12 mm of rainfall; while remaining islands received less. Westerly winds prevailed for the central and southern Maldives during the month of November.    

Predictions: La Niña conditions are most likely to emerge in November 2024-January 2025 (59% chance), with a transition to ENSO-neutral most likely by March-May 2025 (61% chance).

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – November 2024

Monitored: In October, the northern and southern islands received up to 12 mm of rainfall; while remaining islands received less. Westerly winds prevailed for the Maldives during the month of October.   

Predictions: La Niña is most likely to emerge in October-December (57% chance) and is expected to persist through January-March 2025.

Monitored: In July, the northern and central islands received up to 10 mm of rainfall; while remaining islands received less. North-westerly winds prevailed for the northern and central Maldives during the month of July.

Predictions: ENSO-neutral conditions are present and it is expected to continue for the next several months, with La Niña favored to emerge during September-November 2024.

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – June 2024


HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: In May, the northern and central islands received up to 25 mm of rainfall, while remaining islands received less than 10 mm of rainfall. North-westerly winds prevailed for the northern; westerly winds for the central islands and South-westerly winds for the southern islands during the month of May. 

Predictions: ENSO-neutral conditions are present. La Niña is favored to develop during July-September and persist into the Northern Hemisphere winter 2024-25.

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – May 2024


HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: In April, the central islands received up to 20 mm of rainfall; southern and northern islands have received less than 15 mm of rainfall. North-easterly winds prevailed for the northern and central islands and South-westerly winds for the southern islands during the month of April. 

Predictions: A transition from El Niño to ENSO-neutral is likely in the next month. La Niña may develop in June-August 2024 (49% chance) or July-September (69% chance). Seasonal climate predictions predict a wet condition for the northern islands and dry condition for the southern islands from June to August 2024.

HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: In January, central islands received up to 10 mm of rainfall, while remaining islands received less. North-easterly winds prevailed during the month of January over the northern and central islands of MV. 

Predictions: A transition from El Niño to ENSO-neutral is likely by April-June 2024, with increasing odds of La Niña developing in June-August. Seasonal climate predictions predict a dry condition in the southern islands and a near-normal tendency for the remaining islands from March to May 2024.

Experimental Climate Monitoring and Prediction for the Maldives – January 2024

                     

HIGHLIGHTS

Monitored: In December, central and southern islands received up to 20 mm of rainfall, while remaining islands received less. North-easterly winds prevailed during the month of December over the northern islands of MV. 

Predictions: Continuation of the El Niño condition can be expected until March 2024 and shall weaken to ENSO-neutral thereafter. Seasonal climate predictions predict a near-normal tendency for the entire Maldives from February to April 2024.
